Drought Defense - Frequently Asked Questions Print E-mail
Why should I use DD?

   A. Use DD to reduce the of amount water needed to irrigate landscape plants, especially turf. Up to a 50% reduction is

possible because DD helps prevent water loss through evaporation or drainage through the soil profile. It is also useful for

“holding” water on slopes and hillsides.

Q. How is DD applied in the landscape?

    A. DD is easily applied using a common hose-end applicator or a pump pressure sprayer. Commercial applications may also

utilize fertigation units, tank sprayers or drip systems.

Q. When is the best time of year to apply DD?

    A. Any time of year is good to apply DD. It is especially effective in the heat of summer.

Q. How fast can I begin to cut irrigation quantities?

    A. Within the first two monthly applications, provided you monitor your individual soil moisture.

Q. How often do I need to apply DD and do I need to till it into the soil?

    A. Once a month during the growing season for best results. No, it doesn’t need to be tilled.

Q. Is DD hazardous to people, pets, environment, building exteriors or hard-scape?

    A. No. DD is non-toxic and non-staining. It is composed of mostly organic materials. Wash it off walkways to prevent slippery

        conditions.

Q. Can DD mix w/ liquid fertilizer? Is liquid or granular fertilizer OK before or after?

    A. Yes and yes.

Q. Can DD be used on food-bearing plants and trees?

    A. Yes. It is not hazardous to plant leaves and generally improves the quality of food-bearers.

Q. Is DD a concentrate and is it completely water soluble?

    A. Yes. DD is very concentrated and needs to be mixed with water so that only 32 oz. will treat 4,000 sq. ft. (see

application instructions). DD is completely water soluble, which is why it can be easily used in sprayer and drip applications

and does not cause any build-up in soil profile.

Q. What happens when it rains after I’ve applied DD?

      A. DD will be moved deeper into the soil profile, resulting in continued capture of water molecules. DD will not be washed

away or broken down faster by irrigation or rain, nor will it create soggy soil conditions. Up to 24 hours before

expected rain is an optimal time to apply DD, as it will capture rain molecules. It’s been shown that with up to ½” or

more of rain, DD will maintain adequate moisture levels in most soil types for up to two weeks without the need for

          added irrigation.

Q. What happens when the soil freezes after I’ve applied DD?

      A. No adverse effect on the soil. DD will reconstitute its original concentration and effectiveness after thawing. DD has a

          lower freezing point than water.

Q. How does reclaimed or recycled water work with DD?

      A. Same as with fresh water. When applied in conjunction with Liquid Gypsum, DD works even better to create growing

conditions despite the high saline levels in reclaimed/recycled water.

Q. Does DD have any effect on “Brown Patch” brown spot fungus?

      A. Although DD has no fungicidal or pesticidal qualities, it helps create an environment on the leaves of plants and grass

that is not conducive to the growth of fungal pathogens. Use of DD may help stop the spread of Brown Patch once it is

identified, especially due to reduced water.
